SNAS was jointly established in 2006 by GAEC and University of Ghana (UG) with the collaboration of IAEA. This was in response to the increasing threat of nuclear knowledge loss in Ghana and Africa. In 2002, the IAEA General Conference adopted a resolution on nuclear knowledge (GC/RES/11B) which was reiterated at Conferences between 2003 and 2009, emphasizing the importance of nuclear knowledge management. The resolutions demanded for increased awareness and requested both IAEA and Member States to strengthen their activities and efforts in this important area. Ghana indicated its intention to establish a Graduate School of Nuclear and Allied Sciences in a statement presented at the 117th IAEA Board of Governors meeting in 2005.
